Difference in Cisco Switch Model Numbers and production dates?

Hello Group,

In the near future I would like to purchase a Cisco switch for use on my home network (rack mount, gigabit, 48 port, POE) But I have run into a problem, there are TONS of Cisco switches listed on eBay and I don't have a clue as to what the Cisco model numbers mean in regard to when they was manufactured/how old each one is or their features and functions. No idea if the item I am looking at is the most current production model or a model that has been discontinued for 20 plus years. Anyone know of a website I can go to that lists ALL the Cisco switch models and tells me what year each was started production and was discontinued and their features/functions.

the below used to apply, that would tell you which year the device was manufactured in. 

Cisco Serial Numbers are in the form of LLLYYWWSSSS. The YY and WW values correspond to
the Year and Week of Manufacture. Refer to the table below to determine the manufacture date based on serial number.

(For instance, ABC1234AABB would be 12 for the year and 34 for the week.)

Thank you for the breakdown on serial number manufacturing dates. It may be helpful once I narrow the search down to say less than five different switches to choose from but just starting my search that is going to be time consuming having to check the serial number of each unit I find of interest, there has to be a quicker way to narrow the search quicker. Is there some sort of list or a website that provides a breakdown on Cisco model numbers or model series by years (and features), such as for example:

MODEL NUMBER SERIES = DATES MFG

1200 Series = 2002-2006

1300 Series = 2006-2008

1400 Series = 2008-2009

1500 Series = 2009-2011

2650 Series = 2011-2015

3600 Series = 2015-present

I don't think there is a comprehensive list. What are you looking for exactly, a router, a switch ? Anything not offered on the Cisco website is likely to be end of sale/end of life. The serial number is still your best option when it comes to finding out how old the item actually is.

I am looking for a Cisco SWITCH. Minimum requirements are rack mount, gigabit speed ports, quantity of 48 ports and POE. Are there any specific Cisco switch models you recommend? Preferably I would like a Cisco model that is less than 10 years old...

the 3560 would be an option. They approach the 10 year limit though. What do you need the switch for, production, or practice ?

For my own personal home network, but I do NOT want a home consumer model. Are there any other Cisco models you'd recommend? Anyone else have any input/recommendations on Cisco switch models?

Update: Just wanted to share with you that I ended up purchasing a new in the box Cisco Switch model number WS-C3560G-48PS-S V09. It came preinstalled with IOS version 12.2.(50)SE5. The serial number on it is "X X X 1 5 4 6 X X X X". The sticker on top of switch states "Manufactured 2 0 1 1 1 1 1 5". (I spaced the digits out for easier reading) If I am reading the "Manufactured label correctly it appear that this was made in 2011, but if I go by the serial number and compare with your break down list it would have been made in November of 2015...
