General IT help

Hey all, I’m a total noob when it comes to networks and switch configuration. The problem I’m running into is that my company doesn’t have local IT to come and get our internet set up, nor does the ISP seem like they can have a tech come out to assist us in the near future. So, the job falls to me.

The current situation is that we have a local switch in our facility, and it administers the LAN for our office and workshop. Our local switch is connected via fiber optic to the ISP circuit in a separate building. The ISP says that the circuit has been activated. The people in charge of installing the FO say that they can ping the circuit from our building. Both parties suggest that our local switch is not properly configured, hence why we still don’t have internet access.

The switch in question is a Cisco Catalyst 9300-24U with a fiber uplink module (C9300-NM-4G). I apologize since I lack a lot of vocabulary, and I don’t really know what needs to be configured beyond the day 0 configuration wizard with the basics. The ISP has provided us with information about our LAN IP Block, a customer serial IP, a “qwest” serial IP (presumably for the circuit?), as well as the router name and interface port (also presumably on the circuit). The fiber optic connection is on our switches port GigabitEthernet1/1/1.

Things that we have tried so far:

  • Attempting to configure the switch as a dumb hub. I followed some CLI instructions from a collogue.
  • Putting our office ports on Vlan1 with its own DHCP pool and SVI, and the FO port on Vlan2 and assigning its SVI to the LAN IP block provided by our ISP.

There are many settings I haven’t attempted to really play around with such as routing rules.

Does anyone have any tips for what I might need to configure to get a set up like this to work? I can try and provide more information if needed, but this should encompass the basics of the situation.

Hello!

I would recommend you to get some outside consultant help that can get onsite. There is too little information here.

That being said...

I assume the ISP setup a P2P connection that you have to use to connect over them. You will have to setup the gig1/1/1 as a L3 interface and point the LAN IP block they provided over it (some basic routing on the 9300 and at your main office). So you will have to setup a SVI for your users and configure the ports on the 9300 as access so that the users can connect. There is also the quiestion of DHCP - do you have a local DHCP/DNS in your main office if yes you can setup a ip helper inside the SVI to relay the DHCP if not you will have to setup a local DHCP on your 9300... And a lot of other stuff (don't even get me started on security )

Thanks for the input! We are working with the ISP to get a technician onsite to assist, but they are being incredibly slow with their response time and I'm trying to get a band aid solution working in the meantime.

Unless the ISP circuit functions as a DHCP server, we do not have a dedicated DHCP in our rack. I will attempt to do what you suggested and see how it goes! Thanks again for the input
