transfer xmodem using a console cable is slow; don't those routers have CF Flash card? UISB port? I copy image from PC to CF flash using all-in-one- adapter for mine 2801 routers,

Console cable is my only option

Transferring the IOS using xmodem is "old school". This is particularly the case when the router in question is an ISR G1/G2 (and newer).
This is because the router has USB ports which can boot the IOS from a supported USB flash drive.
The router has two CF slots which are removable and IOS can be transfered to the CF cards using a cheap multi-card reader.
