Most packets I have look like this: (sequence, size, and version)
But this particular packet has an extra byte; does anyone know what that represents?

The answer is actually easy.
let a = length byte
let b[n] of byte
n, number of bytes in length variable.
If a > 0x7F then
n = a-0x80
IOW, in this case
