Question on the snmp-server host command

I'm setting up my switches to send traps to lms and have quick question on the config -

What is the difference between the commands

snmp-server host x.x.x.x public

and

snmp-server host x.x.x.x traps public

Does the former send both traps and informs to the given host? Also, what is the community name used for as far as lms and the traps are concerned?

Thanks,

Michael

Hi Michael,

The first command is simply telling the router the community value to use to communicate with the server.

The second one specifies that notifications should be sent as traps, and not informs. This command is really a superset of the former command, since it also includes the community to be used.

The snmp server will drop traps with communities that do not match.

Paresh.
