Understanding CDP and LLDP-MED

If I wanted to implement CDP or LLDP-MED into a product how would I do that?

I understand that LLDP-MED is an industry standard, so is adhering to that a matter of designing my product's HW & SW to that standard?

CDP is Cisco's proprietary protocol, what do I have to do to my product that will allow it to work with CDP, or is that fact that it's proprietary mean that I can't and that I'm stuck with LLDP-MED?

I have basic knowledge of CDP and LLDP. I'm tasked with researching the pro and cons of each.

Thanks for your time and patience.

Hi @NikoJako

You can enable both with 'lldp run' and 'cdp run'.  As you mentioned, lldp is not proprietary and cdp belong to Cisco.

You can enable both. Even Cisco have been using lldp and if you have non-cisco device, lldp is the only option.

when you mention that I can enable lldp and cdp run, is that a Linux command, I'm assuming it's Cisco's coding language?

Again, to confirm, CDP belongs to Cisco, therefore my product cannot ultilize CDP to interact with other Cisco products, but I can use LLDP/LLDP-MED to communicate with Cisco products.

Lastly is LLDP-MED solely made for Voip phones? Or is it a way to advertise hardware attributes of different endpoint types? Touch panels, PTZ cameras, projectors, etc?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Niko,

The whitepaper below covers the history and uses and the pros and cons between CDP and LLDP,  should be a good read to understand the .protocols.
