Want to upgrade FLASH for 3640 ...

In a 3640 router with 16 MB flash memory and two slots for flash upgrade (total max 32MB) while upgrading the current IOS( approx. 6MB) to an IOS of about 24MB, If I upgrade this flash to another 8MB in the second slot, will the ios of 24MB can go into it over combined 16+8=24MB size? ie. does router formats the two chips into one logical space to take up the ios of size about 24MB?

Unfortunately, the answer is NO. You cannot merge different flash devices. Not even can merge both PCMCIA flash slots. The only choice is to update internal Flash to 32 MB (so I think there are not PCMCIA cards for 3640 greater than 20 MB)

Some months ago I faced same problem with my 3640. I needed to install larger IOS in router. I had to upgrade internal Flash to 32 MB.

Please suggest if i can upgrade to ios of size 24MB with internal flash = 16MB(1st slot) + 8MB (2nd slot) = 24MB (total internal flash)...?

YES, if you increase internal flash with an additional 8 MB module you will have 24 MB internal flash (this is a valid configuration) and will be able to load 24 MB IOS (just make sure IOS file really fits into flash). Perhaps after upgrade you will need to format internal flash.

ie. I can type the command sh ver which shows me two internal flashes(16 & 8 seperate)..still I can copy the ios of size 24MB from a local tftp server ?

Not sure what you mean. Can you post the output from "show ver" and "dir flash:" ??
