Windows 10 SSH Client Via Console port

Hi Everyone,

I am new to networking and trying to learn about Cisco products.  Right now I am trying to connect my PC to a Cisco 1921 router.  I have a console cable to the router but I do know how to connect to it via SSH client on the PC.

Thanks for explaining your situation more clearly. Unfortunately SSH is an IP based remote access protocol. It would allow you to connect to an Ethernet port that had an IP address from an Ethernet port on your PC. But the console port does not support IP based remote access protocols. It is intended for serial protocol local access. To access the console you will need to install some additional software on your PC.

hi there,

If using the console cable, unless you have an old PC/ laptop with a COM9 port you will need a USB-serial adapter to connect to the DB9 end of the console lead.

When you connect the usb adatpor, check the widows device manager and look under serial devices, this will tell you which emulated  COM port the adaptor is connected to, note it down.

As for software, on windows I recommend putty (https://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/latest.html), When you run the command on the initial screen , select the 'serial' radio button and i the 'serial line' textbox, type the comX port you noted down earlier. Click 'open', and you should be at the console prompt.

cheers,

Seb.

Thank you for your replies.  I was hoping to use the already installed software in Windows 10 call SSH Client or PowerShell and not have to install another software/app on my PC.
