Being these modules were unable to license signatures for a couple of years now, is there any use for the AIP-SSM-10 aside from a glorified paperweight? I did some cursory web searches, and I didn't find anything that would indicate a method to re-purpose or use them otherwise.
We're still using the ASA 5520 which had the AIP-SSM-10 installed, but, if we can't get signatures from Cisco or an alternate source, then it seems like a waste of power to have the module installed and unused.
These things are, basically, a PC on a daughter card running an IPS operating system. There's so many of these in the field, so I was surprised someone hadn't figured a way to hack them and put SNORT on it or something.
I'd appreciate thoughts and insights!

Personally - if it was the end of life and not support, used as paperweight like any other vendor product -
I have some like Checkpoint and Juniper. cisco too.
Never tried it, but this SSD disk, if you have USB adapter for SSD to i connect them to Rasberry Pi and use them to store the data, while you can install raspberry pi as TAP to sniff the traffic.(i used other drives like intel 30GB or 120GB - some products do not use or no longer required).

Unfortunately, this unit was so "cool" that it had a 256 MB Compact Flash module for it's storage. I might steal the flash for something else and bomb the rest to e-waste.

This is, primarily, lab use at this point, but we can always keep this "coupon" in case there is a purchase need.
