ASA 5505

I have an inherited ASA 5505 V09.  It will not allow connection to the ASDM web page using the default IPaddress followed by /ADMIN.  It does provide DHCP address assignment to connected devices.  It does respond to the console connection using a Telnet type access.  I have restored the factory default (thinking the firmware needed refreshing) and did a WRITE MEMORY command (successful).  Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to correct this dilema?  I'm running asa821-k8.bin with 512 MB memory.

Wow!  The past few days have been a roller coaster for me.  I have corrupted the configuration file, corrupted the configuration register, learned many new (just the beginning) ASA commands, discovered priceless investigation techniques, learned the power of a knowledgeable user community, and learned the value of perseverance.

The URL 192.168.1.1/admin entered in the web browser still does not work.  I have loaded the JAVA and ASDM Launcher on a new machine with the same results.  I did notice there was limited communication between the browser and the HTTP server when I instructed the server to require an SSL certificate.  The prompt appeared on the host computer and proved there was communication.

I am convinced the URL 192.168.1.1/admin approach may be fruitless.  The good news is that starting the ASDM-IDM Launcher was a success.  It did not work previously.  I entered the 192.168.1.1 in the Device IP Address / Name field and was delighted to see the web site's certificate cannot be verified warning (indicating communication with the server).  I accepted with the Yes selection and it began to load software.  Once the Software update complete notification was listed the ASDM 6.2 window was displayed with a wealth of graphic information.

Do you know of any restrictions for the external flash drive (appliance did not like a 16 GB PNY Attache memory stick)?

Now I will start to learn more of the inner workings of the appliance using a friendly graphical interface.  Thanks again for your assistance.  I'm sure you will see future posts by me but without your help I would not have gotten this far.  Thanks again!

Hey Robert,

My pleasure to help man,

Glad to see that is working now

Not sure I got the external flash drive question

This might help:

Can I use external flash as internal flash?

Yes. You need to complete these steps.

  1. Copy the disk0 files to tftp.
  2. Copy them from tftp to disk1.
  3. Set the boot path accordingly. There is also another option. You can also copy the files directly from the internal memory to the external memory with the copy disk0 disk1 command.

Remember to rate all of the helpful posts, that is as important as a thanks,, let me know if you do not know how to rate an answer
