ASA - Backup, Edit, Restore from ASDM

I've been using a pair of ASAs successfully for a few months, providing basic Firewalling and VPN services.  Most of my configuration I've been able to do via the ASDM tool, occasionally using the CLI.  I've been using the ASDM's Tools -> Backup Configurations and Tools -> Restore Configurations ability to make backups of my configuration before doing anything major, but I'm running into a minor snag with the .zip files created in this way.

I can extract the configurations from the .zip files created with the Backup command and review the contents of an individual file (say running-config.cfg), but I can't make changes to that file in a text editor, recompress the file and upload it to the ASA using the Restore command.  ASDM returns an error message saying "Specified source file is not a valid backup file."

Is there some sort of checksumming I'm missing (perhaps in the Version.properties file), do I need specific paths in my edited .zip file, or should I be using something other than Windows' built-in Send To -> Compressed folder to zip these files up?

Hi Jeff,

You can still make changes to the Running configuration or Startup config and then save the file.

You will be prompted by winrar or winzip to refresh the changes made.

After you do that , it would be able to in the restore on ASDM. You don't have to change any extensions etc.

Thanks and Regards,
