Hi
I have a ASA5510 that has been sitting for some time and I have no idea what it was originally used for but I am going to fire it up and use it. It probably needs to be updated in several ways before being put online though. It is an ASA5510 V01, with IOS 7.2(1) and 256MB of memory. Will it need memory and an IOS upgrade to be comfortable running this thing as a firewall touching the outside world? And how hard is it to upgrade the IOS and mem in this thing?
thanks

Hello
Mike here, you can run the ASA with no problem on the version that you currently have, of course, you would like to go to the latest on that trend. The latest on the trend that you are is 7.2.5
There are version families, 7.2, 8.0, 8.2 and 8.3. The one that you want to run depends on your needs, here are the Release notes of them,
ASA 7.2.5

ASA 8.0.5
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa80/release/notes/asa805rn.html
ASA 8.2.5
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa82/release/notes/asarn82.html
ASA 8.3
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa83/release/notes/asarn83.html
Also, here is how you can do the upgrade on the ASA, it is very simple
And here is how you do the memory upgrade
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/hw/video/5500/asa_5510_mem_upgd.html
Hope it helps

thanks for the info.
looking at the memory upgrade it seems all the docs mention a single memory slot. the 5510 I have has 4 memory slots, though it only has one stick of RAM in it currently, in the second slot. Any idea if it can support multiple pieces of memory?
