botnet traffic filter vs smartnet

Hi,

i am now very confusing between two licenses: smartnet and botnet traffic filter.

i am wondering that, is there any dependency between two kind of license.

for example: if smartnet is out of date, so can i still update license botnet traffic filter for ASA 5500 for one or more years? is there any dependency between them?

Can anyone help me to answer this.

Hello, 

AFAIK, smartnet is just the contract. Botnet on the other hand has a key that you need to add into the ASA. Botnet license is always temp license (I believe the longest is one year). 

To answer your question, if your Smartnet expires, it doesnt really matter, the Botnet traffic filter should be still operational.
