The 7000 and 8000 series appliances are the appliances that came with the Sourcefire acquisition. They strictly run the Sourcefire software only and do not have any of the ASA features (Routing, AnyConnect VPN, and many more). They usually also provide higher throughput capabilities when running all FirePOWER (IPS, AMP, AVC and URL Features) services. So if you don't need any ASA features then the 7000/8000 series appliances is probably a better choice.

The ASA5500-X series includes the best of both worlds. Both the ASA and Sourcefire software are run on the same box. So you can still use all of the ASA feature and then also re-direct specific traffic to the Sourcefire module for additional inspection.

I hope this helps!

Hello,

I hope you are referring to the 7000 and 8000 series Sourcefire hardware appliances. This saves the IPS purpose. If you are looking the performance like ULR filtering , malware protection etc then the best option is Sourcefire appliances which gives good performance. You can just have a look at the datasheet if you would like to:-

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/security/firepower-7000-series-appliances/datasheet-listing.html

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/security/firepower-8000-series-appliances/datasheet-listing.html

Above datasheet will give you a brief idea about the expected throughputs also.

Just FYI , we also have Sourcefire modules integrated with ASA firewall which is a software module integration with the ASA firewall. This also saves the same purpose and only exception when it comes to the throughputs. By integrating a Firepower software module , you can redirect the specific traffic which you need the inspection to be happened. Hardware appliances also provides the SSL features.

Rate if this answer helps you.
