You assumption is correct.Keep a copy of " sh tech " command which would include running config. from all the contexts.

From memory when you switch from multiple mode to single mode does it not copy the admin context into the running config for single mode is this only on FWSM ?

Yes,
only the admin context config is saved,Not the rest of the contexts if they have been created.The better approach is to keep a " sh tech " so that you have " sh run " of all the contexts.Atleast,that's what we do in TAC. :)
