how IPS can sniff data?

how an IPS Sensor appliance can get data? As far as i know via span port from a LAN switch. What about inline capture, is that possible?

Hi,

IPS can capture traffic: from the CLI use the "packet capture" & "show packet" commands (some syntax involved but you should figure this out).
