Image Boot Loop on an asa 5520

manuscript1
Level 1
Level 1

Hi

I have done an attempted asa system image upgrade from CLI but have a problem with the old image getting loaded - cannot get the new image to stat after a further reload or reboot

I have copied the new .bin image to flash and can see it in flash/disk0: . I can edit the boot commands so that it points to the new image ....I can reboot to new image once and it seems to load ( I do get an upgrade error file which I havent got my hands on yet - long day !

here is some of my cli output that may help:

ciscoasa# sh ver

Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance Software Version 8.4(5)   ( looks like my code is loaded 845  )
Device Manager Version 6.4(5)

Compiled on Mon 29-Oct-12 10:13 by builders
System image file is "disk0:/asa845-k8.bin"
Config file at boot was "startup-config"

ciscoasa up 6 mins 53 secs

output however shows no boot code configured

BOOT variable =
Current BOOT variable =
CONFIG_FILE variable =
Current CONFIG_FILE variable =

What happens if i reload is it reverts to the old code - The config prior to upgrade attempt did not have any entries in this boot settings (ie :  no boot system {disk0:/ | disk1:/}[path/]asa_image_name) )  so nothing to remove prior to UG

Question is how do I force the new code ? I have no config to save as this  is a lab environment - even if I put in boot command after a restart it losses the "boot system {disk0:/ asa845-k9.bin statement ...." after a further reload in teh boot variables

Must be missing something obvious ! any ideas !? help appreciated !

Hi,

Please ensure you save the memory (wr mem)  after you change the boot variable.

Alos check the config register value ( you can see that in the show version) of the ASA.

It should be 0x01.

Regards,

Aditya

Please rate helpful posts and mark correct answers.

I did teh boot loader chaneg and wr mem but i still seem to be looping around ...initially it seemed ok but after a coupel of reboots i was back in a loop .

here is more cli output - no matter how i set teh boot variable it seems to revert to earlier code - I have had it boot into 845 onec or twice but always seems to rvert back ?! also answers to johnlloyds query cli output

then the original access-list has to be recreated.

hi,

your config-register 0x1 is fine but there seem some issue with your ASA's flash (disk0).

disk0: Filesystem to be checked

use the fomat disk0: global command to reformat your ASA flash and backup license key (if any) using show version and show activation-key commands.

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/security/asa-5500-x-series-next-generation-firewalls/113266-asa-flash-error-ts.html#formatflash

I have got to teh bottom of thsi - for reference

the command " "no boot system disk0:/"image name" works whilst the command "boot system {disk0:/ asa845-k9.bin statement ." alone does not remove teh old one

Reafrsd and thanks  all
