Ok, what is the trick to issue a no shut to a PIX Gig interface? I tried every possible combo of the syntax?

On a Pix you don't do a "no shut" - you just configure the interface with a speed & duplex, without a "shut" at the end.
eg:
interface ethernet0 100full
