How to check the status of the VPN connection?

"sho cry ipsec sa" will show you the tunnels.

sh cryp isa sa (show crypto isakmp sa)
shows isakmp connections in a little better overview.
But here you can't see if any traffic is going over the tunnel.
use sh command in the 1 reply (sh cryp ipsec sa) for that.
