PIX Licensing

Hello:

New to PIX Firewalls and I just want to understand how a license is installed.

I realize that it's purchased through CISCO bu in what "form" does it come in.

Is it a .bin file or an alphanumeric string that you enter that unlocks a certain feature set?

The reason I am asking is that I want to purchase a cheap 520 on Ebay so that I can use it to get some hands on experience. If the PIX comes with a certain license installed, what happens if you reset the firewall to default or install new IOS. Does this wipe the license?

Thanks

Thanks

You never need to reenter the license

Reference for the licenses:

http://cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/vpndevc/ps2030/products_data_sheet09186a00800b0d85.html

The features, max users, encryption DES/3DES/AES, Failover etc, that are enabled on the PIX, you can see with the < show version > command.

hope that makes it more clear.

sincerely

Patrick

Mate,

I would add the following:

Don't get the 520 because you won't be able to use the PIX OS 7.x.x and all of today's implementations of PIX/ASA will use the new OS which is much different when it comes to configuring the device.

Go for a second hand restricted 515E.

Cheers.

Salem.

Thanks - I thought I had read that PIX 520's could run IOS 7.0. You're saying that it can't?

515's are a bit pricey to just train on.

Is there any decent emulator software out there anywhere?

Thanks
