Restore PIX config without merge into running

Assume I have a pix config file backed up. I wish to restore this config to a PIX, having the content of the file REPLACE the current running configuration. My understanding is that with config net that the file will be MERGED into the present config that is active on the PIX. I do not want this. I want the restored file to replace completely what is running. I do not have console access, only telnet access, ie inband.

Can this be done? How?

The way that I know of is to erase the current configuration, reload the system and paste the new configuration. However, that would mean loosing you telnet connectivity, which makes me think that what you are trying is not possible.
