Smart license for fortigate 4120

Hello experts ,

I am getting a bit confused with the smart licensing feature. Not sure if i need it or not in my setup.

We are buying 2 x 4120 + 1 x FMC.

Required features : URL filtering , NGIPS , Anti Malware and firewalling.

Can someone please advise.

Smart license is just a way for you to link your licenses purchased to the system installed. You would have to purchase 2x (Threat + Malware + URL filtering ) license. More details here:

The licenses are added to your smart license account after purchase. You can then link your smart account to your FMC to issue these licenses to the 4120 FTD devices.

Smart license is not optional for FTD. You have to use smart licensing to use one of the features that you need.
