I only I can have FMC virtual hosted on prem with our KVM based cluster, and it is free! and all the costs would be those purchase of FTD device (FPR1010 or FPR31xx) as well as all the licenses.
What would cdFMC be like? Comparing with the two, any major feature missing from cdFMC comparing with on prem FMC?
Any real world experience?

FMCv is not free. You need a separate license for the virtual machine and this depends on how many devices it will manage, in addition to the licenses you require for the FTDs.
The cdFMC follows the CDO licensing model. I am not very familiar with the CDO licensing model, but from the looks of it you require a per device license in addition the the subscription licenses you require for the FTDs.

In addition to what @Marius Gunnerud noted, remember that cost to purchase is not the same as cost to own.
cdFMC not only has major feature parity with on-premise FMC, it is also completely managed (version updates, backups, underlying server and availability of all that) by Cisco. You do pay for that (CDO base license plus per-managed device licenses) but you get all those benefits.
