I understand that Cisco IPS 5.0 software will run on the IDS-4200 series appliances (e.g. - IDS -4235).
Is the reverse true? Can I get Cisco IDS 4.1 to run on an IPS-4240 or an IPS-4255?
Just curious, since I may have to answer the question internally soon...
Thanks in advance,
Alex Arndt

Yes, the 4.1 software will run the 4240/4255.

That is correct. Be sure to take a look at the readme files associated with the system images for TFTP instructions, because the commands are slightly different than on the IDS-4215.
To clarify what Scott and Marco said, the earliest release supported on the IPS-4240/4255 is 4.1(4)S91. The file names on CCO are:
IPS-4240-K9-sys-4.1-4-S91.img
IPS-4255-K9-sys-4.1-4-S91.img

Just an FYI the only Appliances/Modules that support 5.0 that do not support 4.1 are the ASA-SSM-AIP-10 and ASA-SSM-AIP-20.
These 2 modules are brand new and will only support the 5.0 version.
To read more about the 2 new modules refer to:

Thanks to both Scott and Marcoa. Just the info I needed.
I assume that I'll have to TFTP the software image onto the 4240/4255, in a manner similar to working with an IDS-4215, in order to get 4.1 loaded and running. Is this correct?
