Core issue
On the Cisco Catalyst 4500 Switch with Supervisor V-10GE, when a 10-Gigabit Ethernet port is configured other than the interface Tengigabit1/1, these error messages are received in config mode:
Switch(config-if)#interface TenGigabitEthernet1/2
% WARNING: Interface TenGigabitEthernet1/2 is usable/operational in 'all' or 'tengigabit' uplink configuration when only one supervisor is present in the chassis in slot 1.
Switch(config-if)#interface GigabitEthernet1/3
% WARNING: Interface GigabitEthernet1/3 is usable/operational only in 'all' or 'gigabit' uplink configuration.
This happens because when a Supervisor Engine V-10GE is plugged into a W-4510R chassis, there is a choice as to whether to use the 10-Gigabit Ethernet uplink ports, the Gigabit Ethernet uplink ports, or all uplink ports.
Also, when active and redundant Supervisor Engines are installed in the same chassis, out of eight ports only the four uplink ports (Gig1/1, Gig2/1, Gig 1/2, and Gig2/2) are available. For example, two Gigabit Ethernet ports of the active Supervisor (1/1 and 1/2) and two of the standby (2/1 and 2/2).
Resolution
Issue the hw-module uplink select gigabitethernet command to override the 10-Gigabit default setting on the configuration. The small form-factor pluggables (SFPs) are always inactive in a default configuration. So, if the 10-Gigabit Ethernet port is desired instead, issue the command mentioned.
If a return to the 10-Gigabit Ethernet uplink ports is needed, add the hw-module uplink select tengigabitethernet command.
Note: The Gigabit Ethernet uplinks are active on a switchover or reload of the active Supervisor Engine.
