Core Issue

All of the PA-MCX, PA-VXA, PA-VXB, PA-VXC, and PA-MC-8TE1+ card port adapters are not seen in the output of either the show run command or the show version command. However, these port adapters are seen in the output of the show diag command. This occurs if the card type command is not configured. This is due to the fact that these port adapters can operate as either  T1 or E1 mode, depending on the card type command configuration.

The controller t1 or controller e1 global configuration commands fail if the card type command is not configured first.

Resolution

If after installing any combination of T1 and E1 port adapters, the controller t1 or controller e1 global configuration commands are not accepted, yet the port adapter is recognized in the show diag command output, perform the following steps to enable the port adapter for configuration:

  1. Determine the slot number where the port adapter is installed by issuing the show diag command. If the port adapter is installed in a Versatile Interface Processor (VIP), also determine the port adapter bay.
    7513#show diag
    Slot 9:
             Physical slot 9, ~physical slot 0x6, logical slot 9, CBus 0
             Microcode Status 0x4
             Master Enable, LED, WCS Loaded
             Board is analyzed
             Pending I/O Status: None
             EEPROM format version 1
             VIP6-80 RM7000B controller, FRU: VIP6, HW rev 2.01, board revision A0
Serial number: 29328007  Part number: 73-8117-01
Test history: 0x00        RMA number: 00-00-00
Flags: cisco 7000 board; 7500 compatible

             EEPROM contents (hex):
               0x20: 01 4E 02 01 01 BF 82 87 49 1F B5 01 00 00 00 00
               0x30: 50 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

             Slot database information:
             Flags: 0x4      Insertion time: 0x32B962B4 (00:01:45 ago)

Controller Memory Size: 256 MBytes CPU SDRAM, 64 MBytes Packet SDRAM

             PA Bay 1 Information:
8 port, software configurable Multichannel T1/E1 without TDM Port Adapter
                     EEPROM format version 4
HW rev 2.00, Board revision A0
Serial number: JAE071109NF  Part number: 73-7549-02

This example shows the port adapter is installed in VIP PA Bay 1 in slot 9 of the router.

  2. Issue the card type {t1 | e1} slot [bay] command to enable the port adapter. For example, to enable the port adapter as a T1 interface, the command would be card type t1 9 1.

If the router is a Cisco 7200 series router, where the port adapter is installed directly into a router slot (rather than a VIP), the command requires only the slot number. The command does not require the bay number. For example, to enable a port adapter in slot 2 of a Cisco 7200 series router as an E1 interface, the command is card type e1 2.

  3. After the card type command is issued, the interface can be configured by issuing the controller {t1 | e1} slot port global configuration command.
