The Catalyst 4500 CPU Packet Buffer Parser tool converts the output of 'show platform cpu packet buffered' from a Catalyst 4500/4900 platform into a PCAP file and provides L2 and L3 statistics.
Description
The Catalyst 4500 CPU Packet Buffer Parser tool converts the output of 'show platform cpu packet buffered' from a Catalyst 4500/4900 platform running IOS or IOS-XE into a PCAP file (that can be analyzed with WireShark) and provides L2 and L3 statistics including:
* Top Talkers
* Detailed Counters per L2/L3 packet field
Cat4500 CPU Packet Buffer Parser Features:
* Outputs including fields in both decimal (older IOS) and hex (IOS-XE) outputs.
* Multiple cpu packet buffer captures in the same file
* Supported frames and packets:
IP, ARP, CDP, dot1q, STP BPDU and VSL frames.
Use Cases
The Cat4500 CPU Packet Buffer Parser is commonly used when troubleshooting any of the following issues on Catalyst 4500/4900 switches:
- High CPU utilization, which could happen in Campus Networks due to various reasons including:
- Spanning Tree instability due to misconfigured hosts, misbehaved hosts, L1 problems
- Worm/Virus causing affecting stations to burst traffic to the network or DoS attacks
- ARP or Broadcast storms.
- Multicast streams.
- Hosts not able to reach a destination upstream.
