Overview

The Cisco Nexus core switch platform includes the 7000 series switches and the newer 7700 series switches. The 7000 series switches are comprised of the 7004 (4 slot), 7006 (6 slot), 7009 (9 slot), 7010 (10 slot) and 7018 (18 slot). The 7700 series switches are comprised of the 7706 (6 slot), 7710 (10 slot) and 7718 (18 slot) switches. The Nexus switches are high performance distribution and core switches that have features unique to the Nexus platform such as FabricPath, OTV and multiple fabric modules for increasing capacity. In addition the Supervisor Engine 1, 2 and 2E are specific to Nexus switches. Most of the line cards support layer 2 and layer 3 forwarding. The F1 32-port GE and 10 GE line card module is a layer 2 module and used for access switch connectivity. All Nexus line cards are wire rate non-blocking (no oversubscription) except those noted. In addition the line cards specify chassis type and platform support. The Nexus switches use a distributed architecture for all layer 2 and layer 3 forwarding. That means each line card does all the layer 2 and layer 3 forwarding of packets without using the supervisor engine. It is similar to the Cisco 6500 switch dCEF architecture. Some of the Nexus platforms have additional slots for fabric modules that increase the line card data throughput.

FabricPath is a Nexus layer 2 feature available with all F-Series line cards that is designed to replace spanning tree protocol and optimize local and remote data center interconnect. The bandwidth is optimized with multiple ECMP path load balancing while availability is improved with faster convergence using IS-IS SFP routing protocol. Those enhancements available with NX-OS software allows for significant scalability at the data center and cloud service providers. Each FabricPath enabled switch is assigned a MAC address for forwarding Ethernet packets across the FabricPath for all connected switches. The Nexus switch attaches a unique FabricPath MAC address header used for forwarding packets to the neighbor switch. The destination switch then strips off the FabricPath header and forwards the Ethernet packet after doing CAM and ARP table lookups. An advantage of FabricPath is that VLANs can be extended across the data center. That provides layer 2 adjacency without having to move servers.

Overlay Transport Virtualization (OTV), available with all F3-Series line cards, extends the data center layer 2 topology and connectivity to multiple data centers. It creates a single logical layer 2 network with VLANs extended across multiple data centers. The layer 3 OTV edge devices at each data center maintain a table with local and remote mac addresses. Remote host MAC reachability is done with a control plane protocol to advertise local MAC addresses to remote OTV edge devices. The remote MAC addresses have a next hop IP address of the remote OTV edge device. The OTV edge device uses MAC routing transport to encapsulate or add an IP header to the Ethernet layer 2 frame. The IP header contains the next hop IP address of the remote OTV edge device. The IP header is stripped off by the remote OTV edge device and forwarded to the core switch. At that point Ethernet frames are forwarded across the campus switching infrastructure with traditional data plane CAM and ARP table lookups.

VDCs allow for virtualizing or creating logical switches from a single physical nexus switch. The advantages include separate administrative domains, fault isolation, traffic segmentation and security. It is often most deployed to larger data centers and cloud providers for scalability purposes.
