Introduction

This event allows you to learn about platform positioning, as well as best migration practices and tools for a successful and cost-effective transition from vEdge infrastructure to IOS XE SD-WAN.

Cisco’s acquisition of Viptela in 2017 established Cisco as a SD-WAN leader. The ever-evolving world has sprinted towards SD-WAN requiring advancements like location anywhere access with multi-cloud, application experience, security and analytics being the key areas of focus. Cisco announced End-of-Life for vEdge platforms with a vision to move forward with a single ecosystem that has best of the controller architecture and best of the infrastructure running on IOS XE.

Live Questions

Q: So, SD-WAN functionality remains more or less the same?

A: The Base SD-WAN functionality remains the same, but all the NEW innovations are now available on IOS-XE.

Q: Is there an equivalent replacement for the vedge1K? With 8 Ethernet ports and dual PS?

A: The C8200/C8200L could be used with a NIM module. The equivalent platforms also consider CPU, memory, feature support etc instead of just number of interfaces.

Q: How does the automated config conversion handle going from 5 port vEdge 100b to 4 port ISR1100-4G?

Q: Hasn't Cisco already announced EOL for vEdge platform? 

A: Yes, that is correct. The end of sales date is Jan 2023, more details: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/routers/vedge-router/vedge-2000-5000-routers-modules-accessories-eol.html
Consider that vEdge100/1000 Went EOS in Jan 2021, and the Vedge2K & 5K will go EOS in Jan 2023.

Q: Is there any difference of Licensing? Does Cisco has maximum throughput on practical loads for cEdge 8K series?

A: We use the same DNA Subscriptions on the Cat8K. We have made some changes to offer Tiers (T0-T3) compared to Bandwidth specific Subscriptions in the past. This offers a great deal of flexibility to customers.
Regarding throughput and performance, there has been extensive testing done and the slides have the performance numbers published.

Q: Any specific functionality which are available in vEdge and is not available in cEdge?

A: We have the feature support almost same in cEdge as available in vEdge, this session talks about some of the differences you can review the recording or slides. Please consider, 95+% of the commonly used features are available on IOS-Xe, for the rest there are equivalent options¬. In addition, we have put together a slides deck in term of feature comparison. please take review of those slides posted into sales connect and the community.

Q: Is the central control plane changing? Or just the Edges?

A: The Control Plane (OMP) & The Controllers (vManage etc.) remain the SAME.

Q: Does it only work with feature templates? Can it parse CLI templates?

A: Yes, it can work with both feature and CLI templates.

Q: I currently have vEdge devices deployed in my network. Are there any new updates going forward? What support can I still receive?

A: Feature wise, no. The will get only higher Viptela OS releases, but nothing new added.New feature releases will be targeting IOS XE.
