Core Issue
The Policy Feature Card (PFC) extends the features and functionality of the Catalyst 6000 family of switches by providing a number of enhancements such as advanced Quality of Service (QoS) features and security capabilities.
Cisco Express Forwarding (CEF) is a Layer 3 (L3) IP switching technology that provides superior performance compared to other switching technologies, especially in networks with dynamic traffic patterns.
L3 switching is supported by the Supervisor Engine 2 (with PFC2 and Multilayer Switch Feature Card 2 (MSFC2)) as an enhancement called CEF for PFC2. CEF for PFC2 works with CEF for switching unicast traffic (IP and Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX)) and with Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM) for switching multicast traffic (IP traffic only).
Note: The Catalyst 6000 Supervisor IA (with PFC and MSFC) supports Multilayer Switching (MLS) for packet switching.
Resolution
CEF for PFC2 is permanently enabled on Supervisor Engine 2 with PFC2 and MSFC2.
For additional information on CEF for PFC2, refer to Configuring CEF for PFC2.
