Introduction

SD-WAN Conversion Tool is a cloud-hosted web tool that allows Cisco employees and partners to translate and convert Viptela OS configuration or Cisco IOS XE configuration to a compatible XE SD-WAN configuration that can be pushed as a device template for Cisco SD-WAN product. The UI provides users with a simplified, interactive wizard workflow to upload their IOS XE config, map it to the SD-WAN config, and then download the converted config or upload it directly to their desired vManage node as a device template.

The SD-WAN Conversion Tool is intended to perform the following functions:

  • Convert vEdge device and feature templates as per the configurations supported by the target device type.
  • Convert traditional IOS-XE WAN configurations to SD-WAN configurations.
  • Determine what traditional configurations are supported by SD-WAN software.
  • Create device templates, feature templates, and policies based on traditional IOS-XE WAN configurations.
  • Convert legacy software commands into SD-WAN commands, such as:
    • BGP
    • ACL
    • AAA
    • UC
  • Determine what configurations and templates are supported by the target device type for a conversion workflow.
  • Export device templates, feature templates, sub-templates, and policies to vManage or as a Sastre archive. Sastre - Cisco-SDWAN Automation Toolset provides functions to assist with managing configuration elements and visualize information from Cisco SD-WAN deployments. Some use cases include transferring configuration templates from one vManage to another; Backup, restoring, and deleting configuration items; and visualizing operational data across multiple devices. For instance, display the status of control connections from multiple devices in a single table. More details on Sastre tool can be found here.
  • Convert WAN Edge CLI configurations to device and feature templates.
  • Convert localized and centralized CLI policy configurations to vManage’s UI Builder-based policies.

The SD-WAN Conversion Tool will NOT:

  • Fully migrate a traditional IOS configuration to a fully functional SD-WAN configuration.
    • Users must still add SD-WAN overlay configurations and build overlay.
    • Users must still understand SD-WAN concepts.
  • Convert an SD-WAN configuration to a legacy IOS-XE configuration.
  • Automate SD-WAN deployments.

The assumption in using this tool is that the user has experience with Cisco SD-WAN and can use this tool to speed up migrations from legacy WAN to SD-WAN or within SD-WAN space and improve accuracy in those conversions.

Accessing SD-WAN Conversion Tool

Access convert2sdwan.cisco.com from your browser. The landing page of the Cisco SD-WAN Conversion Tool will appear on the screen. To begin, click the “Sign in to Cisco” button.

This will lead the user to the Cisco sign-in page where they will be able to enter their Cisco account credentials.

Once the user has been authenticated, they will be redirected back to the SD-WAN Conversion Tool. A user profile will be created in the tool and user details including email, first name, and last name will be obtained from Cisco’s authentication service.

If you get an error log that you do not have access to the tool, please request access using the “Request Access” button.

Configuration Conversion Workflows

The SD-WAN Conversion Tool supports eight types of conversion workflows, classified into broader groups as listed below:

Device & Feature Templates

Using this group of conversion workflows, users can import, convert, and export templates and policies from one vManage instance to the same or another instance.

  • Live vManage: Using this workflow, users can provide the details of a Live vManage instance to import templates and policies for conversion and export to a vManage instance or as a Sastre archive.
  • Sastre Archive: Using this workflow, users can upload a Sastre archive (as a zip file) created by the Sastre tool as a source for templates and policies. The templates and policies can then be converted and exported to a vManage instance or as a Sastre archive.

Device CLI Configurations to Template Conversion

Using this group of conversion workflows, users can convert device CLI configurations into device and feature templates.

  • IOS-XE CLI: Using this workflow, users can upload an IOS XE CLI configuration file that would be converted and exported as SD-WAN device and feature templates to a vManage instance or as a Sastre archive.
  • Cisco Edge Router CLI: Using this workflow, users can upload a Cisco Edge CLI configuration file that would be converted and exported as device and feature templates to a vManage instance or as a Sastre archive.
  • vEdge CLI: Using this workflow, users can upload a vEdge CLI configuration file that would be converted to IOS XE SD-WAN device and feature templates and exported to a vManage instance or as a Sastre archive.

Device CLI to CLI Configuration Conversion

Using this group of conversion workflows, users can convert device CLI configurations into device CLI templates.

  • vEdge CLI to Cisco Edge CLI: Using this workflow, users can upload a vEdge CLI configuration file that would be converted and exported as a Cisco Edge CLI template to a vManage instance or as a Sastre archive.

CLI Policies

Using this group of conversion workflows, users can convert CLI-based Policy configurations into vManage UI Builder-based policies.

  • Localized CLI Policy: Using this workflow, users can upload a CLI configuration file for a Localized policy that would eventually be exported as vManage UI Builder based policies to a vManage instance or as a Sastre archive.
  • Centralized CLI Policy: Using this workflow, users can upload a CLI configuration file for the Centralized policy that would eventually be exported as vManage UI Builder based policies to a vManage instance or as a Sastre archive.

For each of the conversion workflows, the tool supports two types of targets as mentioned below:

  • Live vManage: When selecting this target type, the configurations, templates, and policies created from a conversion workflow are pushed directly to a public vManage accessible by the tool.
  • Sastre Archive: When selecting this target type, the configurations, templates, and policies created from a conversion workflow are exported as a Sastre archive. The Sastre archive can then be downloaded and uploaded to a vManage using the Cisco Sastre tool.
