Core issue
Multilayer Switch Feature Card (MSFC) does not show up in the show module command output because the MSFC is in ROMmon mode.
Resolution
The show module command output does not show module 15 or 16, even though it is physically present.
The session 15, session 16 or reset 15 commands return with the module # not installed error message.
To resolve this issue, perform these steps:
- Gain access to the MSFC by issuing the switch console command.
At this point, you should see the rommon> prompt.
- If the switch does not go into ROMmon, restart the switch and enter the appropriate break sequence on boot-up.
For example, ctrl-break to gain access to ROMmon mode.
- The correct break sequence should allow you to break into ROMmon mode.
An MSFC may go into ROMmon for these reasons:
- MSFC could not load the Cisco IOS Software image because of a bad or missing boot variable.
- Cisco IOS Software image is corrupt or missing.
- Once you are in ROMmon, perform the steps in the MSFC is in the ROMmon State section of Recover an MSFC Missing from the Supervisor Engine show module Command.
