Goal

To successfully provision a Cellular Gateway using Plug and Play at a remote location provides instant internet access using LTE as transport while deploying with Cisco SD-WAN.

* Starting from 17.6 the Cellular Gateway platforms are running on an alternative image. This software is no longer based on IOS XE.

Note: Web GUI and IPv6 support are only in 17.3-17.5; The support has been dropped in 17.6. Do not upgrade the device to the 17.6 image if required to have Web GUI or IPv6. 

The Cellular Gateway model used in this guide is a CG418-E with a 4G LTE capability running the 17.6 image. 

vManage used in this guide is running the 20.6 version.

Step-by-step Guide

Prerequisite Steps

1. Access the Cellular Gateway through the console to get the device's Serial Number, used in the next step. To do so, follow the example below.

2. Once accessed, the device. Enter the 'show license udi' command to get the PID and SN information.

Make a note of the Serial Number (SN). 

Add Device to Smart Account

1. Navigate to software.cisco.com

2. Scroll down to the Smart Licensing section. 

3. Under Network Plug and Play, click on Manage devices.

4. Click on Add Device(s).

5. Select the Enter Device info manually under the Identify source. Advance to the next step by clicking Next.

6. Click on Identify Device.

7. Enter Serial Number, select Base PID  (CG418-E) from the drop-down menu and add Controller Profile (VIPTELA-CLOUD-HOSTED-PROFILE) from the drop-down menu. Click Save and advance to the next step by clicking Next.

8. Verify the entered information and click Next. Advance to the next step by clicking Submit.

9. If the device is added correctly, you should see a success message. Click on Done to add the device.

10. You will be redirected to the initial PnP Connect Devices page. You should be able to see the newly added device listed with the Pending (Redirection) status.

Sync Smart Account via vManage

1. Log in to vManage.

2. Navigate to the Hamburger Menu, go to Configuration > Devices.

3. Click on Sync Smart Account. When prompted, enter CEC Credentials.

4. Refresh the Smart Account Device Sync Service page to see the status of the sync. The Success message will appear in the Status box.

5. After the device has been successfully added to vManage, you should see the Cellular Gateway in the Devices list.

Note: If you still don't see the Cellular Gateway in the Devices list, try syncing the smart account one more time.

6. Now, you can insert the SIM card and turn on the Cellular Gateway. The device will reach out to the Plug and Play Connect portal to receive the controller information. Do not interrupt the PnP boot-up process, or the redirection to controllers will fail.

7. Go back to software.cisco.com to the Plug and Play Connect portal to check the Redirection status. You should see the Redirect Successful message next to your device.

Create and Attach the Template With Base Configurations

1. Navigate to Configuration > Templates, click on Create Template and select the From Feature Template option from a drop-down.

2. Select Device Model (CG418-E) from the drop-down, Device Role as SDWAN Edge. Finally, add a Template Name and a Description.

3. To create a platform template, navigate to the Cellular Gateway tab and then to the Cellular Gateway section. Select the option Create Template from the drop-down menu.

4. Fill in the blank fields with the Template Name and Description. We will not change any default configurations, except for the Admin-Password. To gain access to the Cellular Gateway after redirection, we must create an admin password in the template. To edit the Admin-Password field, select Global from the drop-down menu next to the Admin-Password field, and type the password of your choice. Advance to the next step by clicking on Save.

5. You will be redirected back to the device template. Once here, click on Create.

6. Once created a template, you need to attach it to the device. To do so, go to Configuration > Template. Make sure you are located on the Device page. If you have many templates in your vManage setup, type CG418 (or CG522) in the search bar to easily find the newly created template for the Cellular Gateway. Select the template you had created by clicking on the three dots, and click on Attach Devices.

7. Select your device from the Available Devices window and move it to the Selected Devices section. Click on Attach.

8. Select Edit Device Template by clicking on the three dots.

9. Add Hostname, System IP, and Site ID. Click on Update. The Status of the device should have a green check-mark. Once verified, advance to the next step by clicking on Next.

10. Select your device from the left pane to see the preview of the configuration and click on Configure Device.

11. If everything is done correctly, you should see the Validation Success and Done - Scheduled messages on the Task View page.

12. Navigate to the console of your device and observe the incoming logs. You should see the commit message performed by vManage.

Verification 

To verify that the device template was pushed sucessfully, follow the steps below.

1. Log in to vManage.

2. Navigate to the Hamburger Menu, go to Tools > SSH Terminal.

2. Select the Cellular Gateway from the left pane to access the device.

3. Enter the username and password used to configure the device to access the Cellular Gateway.

 4. Enter the below command to see the running configurations on the device. Notice the host-name, system ip, and site-id. This step confirms that the template was pushed successfully to the Cellular Gateway.
