Core issue
A Cisco Catalyst 6500 switch with Supervisor 2 engine (Sup2) that runs Catalyst Operating System (CatOS) 7.4(3) can crash with the PID SptTimer process.
The PID refers to the Process Identification number and SptTimer is the process that controls Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) times such as, forward delay, hello and max age. The show log command output displays a PID number as the Exception cause, along with SptTimer.
Refer to Cisco bug ID CSCdu43267.
Resolution
To resolve this problem, upgrade the CatOS on the Supervisor to 6.4(7), 7.6(4) and later releases. Download the appropriate version from the Catalyst 6500/6000 CatOS System Software Download page.
