Core issue
A Cisco Catalyst switch that runs the Catalyst Operating System (CatOS) incorrectly reports a Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) root change with this error message:
2003 Jun 09 11:42:28 EST -04:00 %SPANTREE-5-ROOTCHANGE:
Root changed for Vlan Y: New root port n/m.
New Root mac address is XX-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX.

Resolution
This problem is just a cosmetic issue, and does not affect the operation of the switch.
Upgrade the CatOS software to version 6.4(5.2), 6.4(6.16), 8.3(0.45)BOC, 8.2(0.87)DEL, 7.6(4.1), 8.3(0.28)GLX, 5.5(19.4), 8.4(2.1)GLX or a later release.
As a workaround, change the logging level on the SPANTREE facility down to 4.
