Core Issue

A Bad memory - wrote zero, read 0x00040000 at location 0x00000010 error message is displayed either at boot or after the router has been running for a short period of time. This error message occurs in routers that do not check memory while loading the Cisco IOS  Software.

Resolution

Open the chassis and reseat all DRAM SIMMs.

For information how to reseat DRAM SIMMs, type Installing and Upgrading DRAM SIMMs into the TAC Advanced Search to find information about the router on which you wish to reseat memory.

If the problem recurs, the memory is faulty and needs to be replaced.

When hardware replacement is indicated after troubleshooting, perform one of these options:

  • If you have a hardware support contract directly with Cisco for this part, refer to the Service Order Submit Tool to request a replacement part directly.
  • For warranty service, contact the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) directly at 1-800-553-2447, or online by referring to the TAC Service Request Tool.
  • If your product is not covered by contract or warranty, contact your Cisco partner or reseller to request a replacement part for the hardware component that is causing the issue.
