Core Issue
The Versatile Interface Processor (VIP) crashes due to hardware issues. These are the error messages in Cisco IOS Software Releases later than 11.3(7):
%VIP2-1-MSG: slot4 System reloaded by a fatal hardware error
%VIP2-1-MSG: slot4 caller=0x600B60C0
%VIP2-1-MSG: slot4 System exception: SIG=22, code=0x0, context=0x603B91E8
This is the error message in Cisco IOS Software Releases earlier than 11.3(7):
%VIP2-1-MSG: slot4 System exception: sig=22, code=0x0, context=0x603B91E8
Both messages have the same meaning. The code for the fatal hardware error is SIG=22
.
Resolution
To resolve the issue, follow these steps:
- Reseat the VIP and the port adapters.
- If this does not resolve the issue, try the VIP with the port adapters removed.
- If the card does not generate errors, add the port adapters one at a time to discover the faulty card.
When a hardware replacement is indicated, perform these options:
- If you have a hardware support contract directly with Cisco for this part, use the Service Order Submit Tool to request a replacement part directly.
- For warranty service, contact the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) directly at 1-800-553-2447, or online using the TAC Service Request Tool.
- If your product is not covered by contract or warranty, contact your Cisco partner or reseller to request a replacement part for the hardware component that is causing the issue.
