Cisco sg300-28pp-k9 v02 PoE Failure

Hello, I recently bought a Cisco SG300-28pp, and after using it for a short time, consoled into it, and am getting the following error:

%HAL_config_poe-A-POEFailDetected: POE ERROR(i2c_read_mem failed addr 0x12e6 dev_num 0 val 0x0) was detected: POE is Disabled untill Reset
i2c_status fail: 1

I looked online, but the general answer is that I need to do an RMA. I don't know how to do that, and since I am not a business, I don't have a contact for it. How could I go about getting a replacement/ fix for this?

Hi @XcessiveFear

First of, did you reset the switch ? Tried to change the software version? it is pretty simple upgrade those switches using web interface.

Where did you buy this device?

Hi Flavio,

I tried the factory reset of holding the reset button as per the instructions from Cisco. I believe that the person I got it from has configuration settings on it that is overriding the factory reset, as even though it is factory reset (I can get to the web browser after it fully boots, and the login is the default), there are files in the flash that are "backuplo, 2 image files, and when it boots, it shows that it's generating a SSH RSA key, and trying to load up a SNMP profile.

I have gone and tried to do a write erase on it, but the command is seen as non-compliant and incorrect. I am running 14.1.15 on it, as I just updated it's firmware.

As for where I got it, I got it from a coworker that was unable to console into it, and figured it was broken due to that. It was previously used in a company, but they deemed it suitable to e-waste due to them not being able to access it. So I don't have any service contract with it, and it was years since they used it.

I dont believe is possible prevent the device from factory reset if you did hardware reset like you mentioned.

Make sure you followed all the steps

The reason why I asked where did you buy was because if you did from a Cisco reseller, you should go back to them in order to RMA. If you bought from a thirty person I dont believe you can RMA.

Oh boo. Okay, I did that reset already. Maybe this device is just bonked and not "fixable". I can get on the web interface for it, but it takes like 45 minutes. The console connection is terrible due to the error message popping up all the time and getting in the way of commands. I was thinking I could just turn off PoE on all ports since I don't need it in my setup, and that may help make the error message go away and reduce the risk of it trying to send power over a port and messing up a port or device plugged into it.

Thanks for your help!

If you dont need PoE, that could be one possibility.

Under Port management, disable PoE
