Does anyone use a "DNS dummy VPN" app with family sheild? Dummy DNS VPNs work like a VPN, but are only used for UDP VPN traffic. Using a "dummy VPN" DNS app would work for family shield, but you won't get domain history stats.
If you understand how opendns works, you know that moving between wifi networks won't work well with opendns (non family shield). One example is at school. Even if opendns updater updates the school ip address, other students could also be using opendns. DNS is a very basic protocol. There is no way for opendns to differentiate between users on the same network. This would cause you to see DNS data from other users or your child's data could show up on another opendns dashboard. This is why Mr. rotblitz mentions family shield in the following thread.
The reason I am asking this question is to see if there is interest in a FREE iOS/android app like this or to see if anyone is able to do this already with existing apps. The app wouldn't be specific to family shield opendns. It would support whatever DNS server you choose to use.
One issue is how to prevent your child from simply turning the app off. On iOS, this can easily be solved by making the app age requirements for 17+ This will allow a parent to control the app in iOS parental controls. Android may also support that, I haven't tested that.

A very similar topic has been raised recently: https://support.opendns.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/115001134428
"Even if opendns updater updates the school ip address"
You never ever should register someone else's IP address with your OpenDNS account, if you can at all. The IP address may already be registered anyway, so the attempt will raise an error message.

OK, that makes sense that an error would be thrown.
I have working test apps for iOS and android that will set the DNS settings for family shield. I will update here in a week in case anyone wants to try them out. Again, it is not specific to opendns, you can use it for other DNS services as well.

Well, there are other apps out for Android and iOS already which can set DNS servers, but most of them expect a jail-broken or rooted device. And yes, I would be interested testing your iOS app on a non-jail-broken iPhone with latest iOS if this is what you can offer.

No root needed. It only works on iOS 10+ due to a apple bug in version 9.

Great, this should work! I'm on iOS 10.2.1. And I would need instructions about how to install the app if not coming from the App Store...

OK, we use Apple TestFlight. Here are the steps.
- install Apple's TestFlight app.
- email me at support at smartmadre d0t com
- I will add your email in our Testflight dashboard as a tester.
- Apple will email you an invite code to test the app.
