DNS server not being reached.

Hey,

I just started using OpenDNS. I've been experiencing a weird problem. I've configured my Dlink DIR-868L to the required OpenDNS servers and I have the OpenDNS updater installed on my PC.

Today, while testing my services, I noticed I can suddenly revisit certain sites that I've blocked, and couldn't visit yesterday. The updater continuously tells me that I'm not using OpenDNS, meanwhile my stats are tracking on opendns.com. Meanwhile, the updater intermittantly tells me I AM using OpenDNS. In these short periods, the sites I want blocked, are blocked. I just can't understand why this only lasts for a few seconds before failing again.

Can someone help me in figuring this out? I'm quite confused.

Could it be that your ISP changes your IP address very often?  There's a gap of 5 minutes or so where the Updater doesn't change the IP address information at your dashboard. During this time interval there are chances that your settings do not take effect.

No, I wouldn't think so. My IP adres has remained constant over at least the past 14 hours.

Well, your settings not taking effect can mainly have two reasons:

  • Your DNS queries do not reach OpenDNS.
  • Your IP address information is not updated at your dashboard.

To find what it is, you execute the command from above again when this situation occurs.  If the output looks nearly the same, then it is not an OpenDNS problem, but must be something else.
