Question

Hello. My kid keeps changing his iPhones DNS settings so that it bypasses my router's DNS settings, thus getting arounf OpenDNS. My Linksys router does not give me the ability to block port 53. Do you know of any Netgear routers (or any routers for that matter) that I can use that allow me to block port 53 or have OpenDNS built in so that if they change their DNS settings on the iPhone, it will still block through OpenDNS?

I know you are owned by Cisco now...Is there a Cisco router that provides this function?

(If you are confused by what I am asking, you can ready a blog post about it here: https://support.opendns.com/hc/en-us/articles/227988027)

Thanks in Advance

HI dthomma,

The best way to prevent your kid from changing DNS servers on the iPhone is to put it in supervised mode. You can restrict user access so that he can no longer make these changes. NETGEAR routers cannot force OpenDNS on your kid's iPhone either if another DNS server is hardcoded onto the iPhone.

If you have further questions, feel free to submit a ticket to us.

Thanks for the fast response!

So there is no router that you know of (as mentioned in your blog post) that can restrict it to only the OpenDNS name servers?

Oh, there are many routers, especially all routers which can be flashed with alternative firmware like DD-WRT, OpenWRT, Tomato, Toastman and such.  And there are also many routers where the OEM firmware can block or redirect outgoing traffic over certain ports, like AVM routers.

Thank you so much! @rotblitz

Which alternative firmware do you recommend I install on my Linksys router to filter port 53 and only allow OpenDNS through?

Any mikrotik router can do that

@dthomma
Look at http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato and the link list at the end of the same page where links to many alternative firmwares are listed.  Then check which ones can be installed on your specific router model.  I would think that any of these firmwares can do what you want, including updating your IP address information at OpenDNS.
