Solution for Homework Only Wifi Hotspot - OpenDNS settings

Hello

I have a Google Wifi Mesh setup that has controls that allow me to turn the internet on or off for certain devices on a schedule.

This enables me to turn off the internet for periods when I want my kids to spend time off of the internet.

Now that school is back in session, however, my kids need to use the internet to do their homework. When I turn the internet on for their homework they have all of the temptations to not do the homework (Discord, etc). What I need is a way to turn on the internet with content filtering enabled during the time they are doing homework.

Because Google Wifi does not support content filtering, my idea to fill this need would be to set up a second "homework only" wifi hotspot that I could leave on all of the time. On this "homework only" wifi I would configure OpenDNS to provide strict content filtering.

I purchased an inexpensive Netgear router for this purpose and have managed to connect it to the internet through the ethernet port on the Google Wifi. In order to get this to work I had to set the Netgear router to "bridge" mode.

After having set up the DNS settings on the Netgear router to use the OpenDNS settings, I am still not getting the filtering from OpenDNS. I believe that is because I am bridging the Netgear router to the Google Wifi and it is using the DNS settings from Google Wifi instead.

Has anyone else done this or have a solution? At this point I'm wiling to buy additional hardware, etc, to get this to work.

Thanks

Please provide the model(s) of the Google router(s) and we can advise you as to whether or not the router can be configured to work with OpenDNS. Basically, you just need to access the router’s configuration page and input our DNS numbers. If that router was supplied to you by your ISP you will need to contact them for instructions on updating the DNS settings, as they may have loaded their own, proprietary firmware on the device. Otherwise, you will need to consult your manual or contact the manufacturer for detailed instructions on updating the DNS settings on that particular device.

If the device can not have the DNS addresses changed please remove your router from bridges mode and place the router  in between the Google router and the rest of the devices on your network. You can then configure OpenDNS on that device and it will distribute the DNS settings to the devices on your network.

If that fails please create a support request and when you do so please download and run our diagnostic tool via the support article below from a computer that is experiencing the issue. When the test starts it will ask you if you want to enter in a domain to test. In this field type in ***www.internetbadguys.com***.

***After the test completes, copy and paste the URL into this ticket***. If you are experiencing difficulties copying the URL from the diagnostic tool, please use the steps at http://www.take-a-screenshot.org to take a screenshot of the diagnostic tool after it finishes.
