If he has a different (non-OpenDNS) DNS service configured on his smartphone, or using some VPN or similar, or using Chrome with data saver mode, or using the device in a different network, etc., he would not be using OpenDNS, so his stats would not be able to be captured. Visit http://welcome.opendns.com/ on his device to see if OpenDNS is being used.
