The primary benefit of Four fiber BLSR is that for equipment or individual line failures between nodes, span switches occur rather than ring switches. Since the entire ring does not have to switch, multiple span failures can be supported. Because of long spans and large rings in long haul networks, four fiber BLSR is attractive since many outages result in span switches as opposed to ring switches.
