I have a CCTV networ consisting of IP cameras which at the moment are connected to Trendnet ethernet to FOC media converters at both ends of the fibre. What I wanted to know is. Is it possible to take away the media converter at the NVR end and instead have the FOC cable going directly in to a Cisco Fibre switch. I know there are 24 port fibre switches out there but Im not sure if they can handle the protocols for CCTV with out converting the fibre back to ethernet before it goes into a switch. I think it is possible but just looking for some advice.
I am looking to relocate a rack and to eliminate using some old legacy FOC to ethernet media converters at the NVR end.
Thank You

Hello @Kuldeep72,
Greetings,
Actually if the switch has a fiber optic port (SFP) so you can use it directly without needing a multimedia converter (MC) in between, but this is only 1 side of the FOC, what about the other side? I don't think that there is a NVR supporting a fiber port, so you will need anyway a MC in the side of the NVR. The most important that this MC will not be bought in pair, because it will not work with the switch.
Note, that MC and FOC are considered to be layer 1, so you don't need to think about the supported protocols, everything will work well! you just need to pick up the compatible physical components that can work together!
I mean the type of the FOC (whether multi mode or single mode, UPC or APC, ....ect.)
Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any further inquiry.
Also please don't forget to RATE any helpful response and mark solutions!

This should work as long as the switch side has the same optical module wavelength, i. e. LR to LR (and not LR to SR).
