Hi Cisco

May i have your advise regarding about the GLC-SX-MMD. We have SINGLE MODE FIBER BACKBONE but we was buy this spf module GLC-SX-MMD which is its working for Multimode FIber cable

Is it possible if I use Multimode Fiber patch cord for GLC-SX-MMD to connect our SINGLE MODE FIBER BACKBONE? Can it be work? I have read some article below

http://www.lanshack.com/ModeConditioning.aspx

SM Backbone > MM Patch Cord > GLC-SX-MMD > Cisco Switch

No, you cannot do that.

Mode conditioning patch cables are designed to allow you to convey coherent (laser) signals from a singlemode transceiver across a multimode cable plant, subject to certain limitations.

You are asking about the opposite use case - transmitting non-coherent (LED) signalling across a singlemode cable plant. The optical characteristics of the multimode light will not permit you to do this with any sort of effective operational reliability.

Hi Marvin

Thank you for your feedback. To make it work with Single mode fiber backbone that it means i need to change my GLC-SX-MMD to SIngle mode SFP?

or other option

I need to change my Single Mode Fiber backbone from Single mode to Multimode backbone if need to reamin use GLC-SX-MMD (Multimode SFP). Am I right?

Correct.

The GLC-LH-SMD would be the most commonly used transceiver for your use case.

I agree with Marvin, you'd better buy a Cisco single-mode SFP, which will save all your problem.

Good luck
