The “Unknown Error” message usually means the NT or Exchange account creation failed from underneath us for some reason. We’re working on getting better logging in place to try and pull better messages than “unknown”, which I know isn’t too helpful… many times we don’t get much back other than a generic failure code, however.

One of the things that’s caused this in the field from time to time would be if the minimum NT password length is, say, 6 and the default NT password on the subscriber template your using to create this person is “12345”. The NT account creation fails in this case and you’ll get that.

Another possibility is a conflict with an existing Exchange account alias or something along those lines. This is a problem for sites that don’t have matching NT and Exchange aliases (which is rare, but happens).

Also, be sure that you have Domain Admin rights… we WILL let you install without these rights and if the account you used to install doesn’t have it, you’ll see the same thing here. If you’re logged in as that account doing your testing, that wouldn’t be it since it sounds like you can create users in NT/Exchange OK… double check which account is associated with the AVCSxxx services in the SCM just to be sure.

Beyond that, I’d have to direct you to call our support folks and we can get into your system and investigate.

Hello, I have the same problem you do in regards to adding subscribers. Were you able to figure out why this was happening? If so, any info would be very helpful. Thanks for your time.

We tracked the SA creation problem down to a situation where a public distribution list referenced in the subscriber template being used to create users got too many users in it, the SA was taking too long to check and see if the new user was already a member or not and it would time out, failing to create the user. This has been fixed in the upcoming 2.4.6 release and you can work around it now by removing any PDLs from the subscriber template you're using.

There's also a known problem with the stand alone import utility (not the SA) where adding users using a template that has no PDLs associated with it throws and exception (anyone want to comment on the irony here?). This has also been fixed in 2.4.6.

If you're having a different problem than either of those two, be sure to contact our support folks and get a ticket open since we don't know about it at this point.
