Nexus 3172TQ vs Nexus 9372TX

Community,

My company is looking at adding some 10Gbps functionality to our existing Data Center infrastructure and I wanted to get your feedback on the following 2 switches. Were currently running a pair of Nexus 9396PQ switches as our core in NX-OS mode, no ACI is planned for the near term. From what I understand, with these parent switches, adding a 10Gbps FEX is possible but we cannot take advantage of the 40Gbps uplinks with our current 9396PQ 40Gbps expansion modules. Im told that the 40Gbps modules we have dont support FEX, so ive turned my attention to just adding a couple of switches instead of going with a FEX. The 9372 is considerably more costly than the 3172 but hardware wise they seem pretty similar. The only difference I can see is that the 9372 can run ACI mode and the 3172 cannot. Again, all were doing is looking to add 10Gbps to the Access/Leaf layer as all of our current FEX's are 1Gbps only. We are using the 9396's for our current 10Gbps needs for some of our servers/hosts but we will need more port density and i dont want to use up all the ports on our core switcthes for Access/Leaf layer purposes.

Any feedback you can provide on the pros/cons of these two switches would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The Nexus 3K's where designed around a merchant silicon (why it cannot be used for ACI) and are typically used for high frequency trading. Also please remember that 10G cooper ports run hot and do run into some intermediate issues with dropped frames and cable lengths absolutely have to be taken into consideration. Honestly I wouldn't look at either the 9372 or 3172 and would consider looking at the Nexus 93108TC-EX instead.

Rick,

Thanks so much for your input. Ill definitely take a look at the 93108TC-EX. Thanks!
