Hi,

Problem Detail:

Some devices are directly connected to the switch, from a remote location (different network) you can only ping or access the device AFTER someone on the LOCAL network has pinged or accessed the device.

After a certain timeout period the problem resurfaces

I've seen this on the old 1900 switches, where you had to add the MAC address permanently to the switch, what would you recommend to do in this scenario?

On the 1900 series this is typically caused by the use of a setting on the uplink port that configures it as "Network Port". With that option set, broadcast packets are forwarded only to the uplink. This causes ARP resolution to fail. You can only access a device after it is known in the switch's ARP table. Typically, the device itself needs to send a packet for that.

As far as I know, this setting is not possible on the 2900 series. Still I hope that you get an idea of where to start looking.

Regards,

Leo
