3548XL IOS Upgrade

I am trying to upgrade from 12.0(5.2)XU to 12.0(5)XW. I have managed to TFTP the images out of the switch for backup but I cannot put in the new files.

I get 2 messages depending on what I try

no such file or directory (even though the .zip files there)

unrecognised character (or something like that) in the file name

Any help would be much appreciated.

I realise I am missing something obvious!

Many thanks

Paul.

Ah, a .tar. That means you must have a 2900XL or 3500XL, I guess. In which case the upgrade procedure is entirely different, and you have to get the switch to de-tar for you. It is a matter of changing the name of the existing image so that when the switch de-tars the new one, it overwrites it. It sounds messy, but it does work. You should follow the document to the letter.

Careful how you type the file name!

Did you use the full path name, including the flash: prefix?

Hi Kevin,

I am an utter novice here but I have progressed since my orig post. I missed of the .tar at the end!!! (Fool) and I am now using tftpd32.

I am at the point where it is telling me the image is too big. I need to delete something.

I thought the new image would just overwrite the old.

Thanks for any again help.

Paul.

A bit more info!

it is telling me

remove unwanted files from the flash and try again.

How do I know which files I can remove? Is there any info anywhere on this?

Can anybody please help?

I am trying to upload .tar file into my switch and it is saying I need to clean out my flash directory.

I can see whats in there by using telnet but I daren't delete anything. I do not want to get in a situation where it locks me out.

Can somebody suggest something I could read to help me? I am new to cisco and I would appreciate your help.

Many thanks

Paul Shelley

Hi Kevin,

Thank you very much for your help. I did have the notes that you pointed me to but I was not sure if I had obtained the right instructions.

Your message to me not only verified that I was on the right track but also gave me a little confidence boost.

It looks like it has worked as I can see that the new IOS release is in my switch.

Thank you very much for your help.

I appreciate it.

Kind Regards

Paul Shelley
